Rusty St. Cyr, Head Coach

TEAM:  7th grade Boys (U-13)

If it weren't for coaches in my own younger years, I honestly might not even be here. And I certainly wouldn't have considered college, let alone walked-on to a team to later get an athletic scholarship. I coach to pass along what my mentors & coaches offered me — the experience of being seen, valued, and challenged to aim higher than I thought possible, and for a greater good than just my own recognition.

So, I've been at it ever since, helping coach even at age 15. Later I studied Physical Education in college, earned graduate degrees in Teaching, Seminary, & Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and have spent years volunteering with youth across multiple sports. Soccer is the sport I always wished I'd played when I was younger — I fell in love with it stumbling onto the 1998 World Cup scene in Paris while backpacking Europe, and have been hooked as a fan ever since then and living in Scotland in 2001. Now I get to coach the 7th grade boys, which includes my son Jack in his 5th year with CVSC/Newberg Youth Soccer, which makes this all the more meaningful.

By day I serve at George Fox University as a chaplain/counselor and service-learning coordinator — work that keeps me deeply invested in young people becoming the best Humans they can become -- which is essentially the same goal I have for every CVSC player:  develop them into Ideal Team PlayersPlaying Hungry, Smart, & Humble. Not just on the field, but in Life.
